The international research institute IRAM is a leader in the field of radio astronomy at millimetre wavelength. IRAM operates two observing stations: NOEMA, an interferometer on the Plateau de Bure in the French Alps and a 30m telescope atop the Pico Veleta mountain (Southern Spain). These observatories are among the most powerful radio telescopes in the world.

IRAM is seeking an operator for the NOEMA observatory on the Plateau de Bure (France)
Position
The successful candidate will be responsible for the set-up and the monitoring of the astronomical observations and to ensure the safety of the instrument. He/She will interact with the science teams who process the observed data and with the technical teams who ensure the maintenance of the installations.
Working conditions
• Working place: Plateau de Bure (Hautes Alpes, France) – NOEMA observatory.
Fed and housed on site
• Work in an isolated place, at a height of 2550m, over 7 days shifts
• Independent work in a small team (6/7 people)
Main tasks
• Use the dedicated software to set-up and run the interferometer
• Monitor the operation and carry out proper inspections
• Detect issues, take part to diagnosis and fixing
• Ensure the safety of the instrument according to the weather conditions
• Ensure the safety of the site
Other tasks
• Be part of the group activities (instrument tests, moving telescopes on their tracks,...)
• Receive public during visits of the observatory
Required profile
• Associate's degree in Science or Applied Science or experience in similar position (scientific instrumentation,...)
• IT: basics of programming (e.g., fortran, C, python, matlab,…), comfortable with command line interface
• Good communication skills
• Languages:
Intermediate level of French (CEFR B1)
Elementary level of English (CEFR A2)
