Thierry Breton

Description
A computer engineer, Thierry Breton began his career as a technology entrepreneur, setting up Forma Systems in the United States in 1981, which he ran for 5 years. During this time, he published a number of techno-thrillers, including Softwar, which sold 2 million copies and was translated into over twenty languages worldwide. In France, he designed and then managed Futuroscope, the first science and technology theme park, between 1986 and 1990. At the same time, he was a regional councillor and then vice-president of the Poitou-Région Charentes from 1986 to 1992. He went on to manage a number of major companies in the IT and new technologies sector. He headed Bull from 1993 to 1997, before taking the helm of Thomson Multimedia, a global electronics company. In 2002, he was appointed CEO of multinational telecoms operator France Télécom, and between 2005 and 2007 he was France's Minister for the Economy, Finance and Industry. In 2009, he became CEO of Atos, a digital technology and services company, until 2019.
He will chair the ANRT, the French National Association for Research and Technology, until 2019. In 2019, he became European Commissioner for the Internal Market. Until October 2024, he was responsible for industry, services, digital, defence and space, as well as tourism and audiovisual affairs. Thierry Breton is a member of the French Academy of Technology.
