Physical measurements & Instrumentation Technician - ILL

Context The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international research organisation at the forefront of neutron science and technology. Come and join the ILL’s Services for Advanced Neutron Environments (SANE), which is responsible for development, maintenance and user support for equipment used to subject samples to extreme conditions of temperature, magnetic field, pressure and other physical parameters. Your tasks Following a period of induction and training, you will work as part of a team of around fifteen people, primarily in the laboratory and the experimental areas. You will have the following duties: • Support colleagues and visiting scientists in order to ensure the smooth running of the experimental programmes • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair and configure cryogenic equipment • Draft and maintain technical documentation and occasionally conduct internal training sessions • Contribute to the development of new sample environments • Work with your team to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues. Your profile • You have a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification (HNC/HND, foundation degree or equivalent) in physical measurements and/or instrumentation. • You are interested in the field of scientific instrumentation and would like to learn how to develop and use complex measuring instruments. • You have a basic knowledge of mechanical engineering and are keen to develop skills, for example, in TIG welding, brazing, industrial drawing, etc. • Knowledge or experience in cryogenics and vacuum technology would be an advantage. • You are an enthusiastic team player with good organisational skills and a service-oriented attitude. • You are a good listener and have excellent interpersonal skills. • You have at least an intermediate level of English, in particular spoken English.
